Alumni Spotlight-Nanyamka Moore

Nanyamka Moore is an Alkebulan Alumni member, born in Atlanta, GA and raised in Detroit, MI. Nanyamka says she’s grateful that her parents made sacrifices for her and their family, so that she could receive the care, love and support she felt growing up. She credits her family and extended family in the PAOCC who stepped in to guide her growth and development into the woman she is today.

Nanyamka is an Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne University graduate, where she majored in Mass Media and Public Communications, minoring in Media Productions. She says early on she fell in love with the aspect of creating and sharing her stories. This led to her later on producing and directing her own videos. She’s also a graduate of Claflin University where she majored in Business Administration. Nanyamka was a guard and played basketball in college, then played professionally for the WBCL League currently known as the ABA League for 4 years. Her time playing basketball then led her to coaching at the age of 25 for 10 years first at Clalflin University, Robert Wesley College, Hamilton College and then Chicago State.

During the pandemic, Nanyamka’s career took another path. “I began tapping into other areas. I love working in the community and bringing people together. By doing this, it allows me to use my gifts to help others see the greatness in themselves.” Nanyamka is now the founder and owner of Open Arms THTH LLC, which she founded about two years ago. She is also licensed in the financial and business services. With her business, Open Arms THTH, she provides financial literacy, team building, and mind body and spiritual practices, working with over 20 teams and organizations: The Learning Center Financial, The Detroit Pistons- She Hoops Tournament, and Hillside Work Scholarship Program… and she’s just getting started. She says she was motivated to have a young mentorship program for young girls, providing a safe space for them outside of basketball.

So what else is this Alum up to now… she’s also the Secretary of the Alkebulan Alumni, as well as the Treasurer in the Atlanta Chapter.

“My upbringing was special. Anytime I was around the group, I felt I could be doing so much more. I realized I could be doing more to help the community that helped raise me. If I can change just one person’s life, it’ll uplift the community.”

The message that Nanyamka has for the younger members and future generations of The Shrine is there is no limit to the person you can become. If it’s your purpose and passion, then surround yourself with people who support you. Never take no for an answer.
